MLO Description
MLO Nuclear pore complex
Synonym Nuclear pore complexes, NPC, NuPC
Description Nuclear pore complex (NPC) is primarily a site in the nuclear envelope, which regulates entry and exit of cellular material including proteins and RNA. It comprises at least 30 proteins called nucleoporins . Previously, electron micrographs of the nuclear periphery have revealed that euchromatin tends to localize near NPCs, while heterochromatin lies close to the nuclear periphery and lamina. Not surprisingly, various studies have shown an association between active genes and NPCs. The role of NPCs in genome organization and transcription is well established in yeast; however, its role in higher eukaryotes is just starting to evolve.
